Kavita Ramdas is a determined advocate for women’s rights. Throughout her TED talk she spoke about three women who really made a difference in her life, who fought for their rights, while also protecting and acknowledging their culture and the traditions that go along with it.
Something that Ramdas said during her talk that stood out to me was “That’s the night I learned the rules about what it means to be a female in the world. Women don’t make those rules, but they define us, and they define our opportunities and chances.” She said this when she was opening up about her widowed Aunt and how her relatives treated her once she was widowed, this instance sparked an outrage in Kavita to fight for women rights. Kavita was so passionate while discussing all the topics she went over about feminism around the world and throughout different cultures. Her passion and first-hand experiences are what definitely kept me engaged and lead me to wanting to hear more.
I read an article on CNN titles “Landmark ruling grants women equal rights in Indian army.” The ruling means that all women officers will now be on par with men when it comes to promotions, ranks, benefits and pensions as their male counterparts. This was something that made me think of Kavita’s TED talk and how her fighting for women’s rights in India and across the world is making an impact. A quote that stood out to me in the article was, “This change will lift up women — not just in the army but all girls across the country and the world,” said Lt. Col. Seema Singh to reporters after the court ruling. This is empowering to see how India is putting an end to gender discrimination especially after watching Kavita Ramdas TED talk.
