Intersectionality is the idea that we experience life, discrimination, and even benefits based on identifies that we have even given ourselves or were born with. An example used in the reading this week was black women have discrimination coming from not only their race, but also their gender or religion. This shows how discrimination can happen on several different factors.
Everyone has different identities. For me, I identify myself as a white woman, who is Catholic, and privileged enough to be attending an extraordinary University studying Elementary Education. There are things I’ve endured throughout my life that has shaped who I have become, with a strive to want to learn and succeed in life. Although that is how I identify, it is important to understand the difference. Everyone comes from different cultural, political, historical, and economic backgrounds and that is something for everyone to be proud of.
The importance of similarity really stood out to me in the article, “Introduction to Global Women’s Studies.”
“In ways women all over the world have a lot in common. Almost every women work extremely hard in both paid and unpaid labor, et married, structure their lives according to their children’s needs, worry about unplanned pregnancies, experiences gender discrimination, and are at some risk for gender violence such as rape, sexual assault, or domestic violence.” (p.7)
It’s true it doesn’t matter about our race, sexuality, or culture we are all the same and should be treated equality. This video is called, “Don’t Put People in Boxes.” The video proves that we all have a lot more in common then we think we do. It doesn’t matter where we come from, what gender we identify as, we are all PEOPLE.
